Glass fusing

Glass fusing

I’ve got four website makeovers and one completely new site to design over the next few months so, in line with the advice offered by Julia Cameron, I spent this morning topping up my creativity bank by having a play at glass fusing with WickedGen.

We started with plain pieces of glass and decorated it with various types of coloured glass. There is all sorts to experiment with, from finely ground glass which is like powder through to small crystals, plus off-cuts from bigger pieces and thin long strands. Some of them melt into each other, some leave bubbles in the glass, and others change colour completely once they have been fired.

These are my three pieces of glass which will be going into the kiln tonight. The first will be placed on a mould and as it heats up it will melt into the shape to make a trinket tray. It’s a little darker than I intended, but the lumps of coloured glass will melt into each other and I’m hoping it will turn out quite fun and funky.

The second will have a copper loop placed in the top so that it can be hung in a window. The pink ‘flowers’ are made of thin pieces of blown glass called confetti or egg shell, and the heat of the kiln will turn them a gorgeous red.

The third is a pendant (although I’d probably use it as a keyring or handbag charm). It has a heatproof piece of material across it, and once it is fired with a clear piece of glass placed on top of it, the material will be removed leaving a gap for a chain to be put through.

I’ll be picking up the fired pieces next week, and it will be interesting to see how the colours have changed with the heat. It doesn’t really matter how they come out as I had a fun, relaxing morning making them… but if they come out looking good then I will be a very happy bunny!
